Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP)
|
A manner of transmitting voice telephone signals via the Internet or other data
networks. When a analog telephone signal (voice of fax) is transmitted, it then is
converted into a digital form. The digital form has packet routing information
added to it so that it can be routed properly through the Internet or data
networks to it's final destination.
When a calling telephone or multimedia capable computer dials a phone number
it is routed to a voice gateway. The Voice gateway then decodes the dialed
digits and decides the destination IP address of the gateway that is available to
service that specific number.
The remote gateway signals the caller of an incoming call by ringing the
destination phone. When the receiver is picked up at destination, a message is
sent between gateways creating a linked highway.
The linked highway is used to transmit the audio, plus convert it into a digital
form, compress, packetize the information, assign destination gateway address
to each packet, route the packets, and finally convert the sent digital audio
packet back to its original form.
